Researchers from the University of Graz’s Wegener Center approximated that the heatwaves in June and late July resulted in socioeconomic losses totaling about €1.4 billion. This estimate encompasses health impacts, reduced workforce productivity, damage to agriculture, infrastructure strain, and increased cooling needs. It also accounts for ecosystem stress and pressure on public services. This figure does not represent an official government damage assessment and differs from insured-loss estimates, which only reflect claims covered by insurance policies.
Heat intensity surpasses previous national records
The scientists evaluated the heatwaves using area-degree days, a combined measure of temperature, duration, and geographic extent. The June event accumulated approximately 16,700 area-degree days. Their analysis estimated the late July heatwave at between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior benchmark was based on a 24-day heatwave during July and August 2013, which registered about 22,100 area-degree days across land at elevations below 1,500 meters.
The intense early summer heat also correlated with a notable increase in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported an estimated 395 deaths linked to heat during June 2026. This figure marked the highest June death toll since the agency began tracking this data. Heat-related mortality indicates excess deaths during periods of extreme heat, not necessarily requiring heat to be listed as the sole cause on death certificates.
Severe drought exacerbates stress on Austria’s environment and water resources
The heatwave followed months of below-average rainfall. From January 1 to July 27, the total precipitation nationwide was approximately 426 millimeters, compared to the average of 609 millimeters for that period—a shortfall of nearly 30%. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest since at least the early 20th century. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland experienced some of the most significant rainfall shortages.
High-pressure systems, abundant sunshine, and scarce rainfall amplified evaporation during late May, June, and July. These conditions depleted soil moisture and stressed crops, rivers, forests, and regional water supplies. Climate records indicate that Austria’s heatwaves are becoming more frequent and longer-lasting, with average peak temperatures during such events rising by about three degrees since the 1980s.
