SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Near Spokane, three rapidly spreading wildfires have led to the destruction of at least 700 buildings and prompted the evacuation of approximately 67,000 residents. The fires, named Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview, have consumed more than 8,000 acres since Saturday. Authorities reported no fatalities or serious injuries by Monday night. Over 1,000 firefighters have been deployed across Spokane County to contain the flames, safeguard communities, and protect vital public infrastructure.

Eastern Washington fires leave 700 structures destroyed
Eastern Washington fire response expands after hundreds of structures are destroyed.

Intense winds propelled the fires through dry grasses, wooded areas, and residential neighborhoods north of Spokane. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River, rapidly advancing into northwest districts shortly after ignition. The flames caused damage to homes, commercial properties, vehicles, power equipment, and other assets across various communities. Infrared scans indicate possible harm to hundreds more structures, though detailed assessments had yet to confirm these damages.

In connection with the Old Trails Fire, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office detained 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson. The investigation has linked this arrest solely to the Old Trails blaze, which originated near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. This charge remains under court review and does not imply guilt. Separate probes are ongoing regarding the origins of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires.

Massive evacuations affect Spokane’s at-risk communities

Authorities issued evacuation orders for extensive sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, as well as neighboring parts of the county. Medical staff evacuated patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center amid the expanding fire threat. The city opened its convention center as a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. Local organizations stepped in to provide essentials such as food, water, emergency childcare, and other aid for families fleeing the affected areas.

Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington declared a statewide emergency and called in the National Guard to support firefighting efforts as the fires continued to spread across eastern Washington. This declaration facilitated coordination among state and local agencies for deploying personnel, equipment, and emergency services. A statewide burn ban remained in effect during the intense heat and drought conditions. Washington also requested federal aid, as firefighting teams managed several large incidents across the region.

Fire crews work to protect infrastructure and residential areas

Washington State Department of Natural Resources joined local and federal teams battling the Spokane Complex fires. Aircraft deployed fire retardant, while ground crews established control lines using engines, hand tools, and heavy equipment. Firefighters focused on safeguarding roads, electrical grids, hospitals, and water treatment facilities near the fire zones. As of Monday, managers reported no containment of the three primary fires, and closures at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks persisted.

The fires caused widespread damage to electrical infrastructure, cutting power to thousands during the initial days of the emergency. Utility crews worked to restore power once it was safe to access the affected areas. Authorities urged residents to heed evacuation alerts, avoid closed roads, and keep drones away from firefighting aircraft. Damage assessment teams continued inspecting burned neighborhoods and verifying property losses before releasing a comprehensive damage report.
