KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – Since the outbreak’s onset in May, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has documented 2,267 confirmed Ebola infections and 893 fatalities. The latest government figures, covering reports up to Friday, July 17, show an addition of 86 confirmed cases and 29 deaths in the past 24 hours. These figures suggest a case fatality rate of approximately 39%.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 2,267 cases and 893 deaths
Health teams continue Ebola testing and contact tracing across five affected DRC provinces.

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests identified the Bundibugyo virus in samples associated with severe illnesses in Ituri Province. This marked the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was first identified in 1976. Two days later, the World Health Organization designated the situation as a public health emergency of international concern.

By July 15, health officials had confirmed cases across 46 health zones in five different provinces, specifically Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo. Of these, 38 zones were active, reporting recent cases. Nearly 90% of all confirmed infections originated from Ituri, with Bunia, Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, and Nyankunde being among the most impacted locations.

Enhanced testing efforts refine outbreak understanding

As the outbreak expanded in northeastern DRC, authorities ramped up surveillance, laboratory testing, and sample analysis. This included testing of older samples collected prior to laboratory confirmation. By mid-July, over 80% of newly identified cases were outside existing contact lists. Additionally, about two-thirds of the recorded deaths occurred in communities where patients did not reach healthcare facilities before passing away.

Response teams persisted with contact tracing, clinical management, infection prevention, and public health outreach in affected communities. By July 15, 12,693 contacts had been identified across Ituri, North Kivu, and Tshopo, with 10,195 actively monitored during this period. Challenges such as insecurity, population movements, and strained local health infrastructure continued to hinder response efforts in eastern DRC.

Regional outbreak driven by Bundibugyo virus

Bundibugyo virus transmits through direct contact with infected blood, body fluids, or contaminated objects. Typical symptoms include fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some patients may develop internal or external bleeding during severe illness. Although there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this strain, early supportive care can enhance survival chances and assist medical teams in symptom management.

By mid-July, Uganda had reported 20 confirmed cases and two deaths. Authorities linked 15 of these infections to imported cases, while five were associated with contacts or healthcare workers. Uganda discharged its last Ebola patient on July 16 and initiated a 42-day enhanced surveillance period. The DRC continues to be the outbreak’s epicenter, with 2,267 confirmed infections and 893 deaths according to government reports through July 17.
