MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s power generation saw a 4.3% increase year-on-year during the first eight months of 2026. The total electricity produced reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, up from 35,935.3 GWh in the same period in 2025. This growth represents an increase of approximately 1,546.5 GWh. Initial data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated gains across multiple governorates. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, an uptick from 5,676.9 GWh in July. Overall, the country’s electricity output remained above the levels recorded in 2025.

Muscat experienced the highest surge in total electricity generation, with a 204.8% increase compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% rise, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% growth. Regional increases also included a 5.5% rise in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah, while Dhofar’s output increased by 4.6%. The data reveals significant regional variation in electricity growth, with many governorates recording higher production during the reporting period.
However, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a different trend, with combined electricity output dropping 16.4% from the same months in 2025. Meanwhile, Musandam’s production reached 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the previous year. The regional figures suggest that most areas covered by the national data registered increases, keeping Oman’s overall electricity generation above the 2025 figures through August 2026. These statistics encompass data from January through August 2026.
Net Electricity Production Shows Overall Increase Across Oman
During the same period, net electricity output also experienced growth, rising 4.6% to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This measurement accounts for purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the way with a 204.4% increase in net production. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar increased by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The total national net increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah combined grew by 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw a 16.6% decline. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with an annual change rate of 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation remained higher than the corresponding period in 2025. The regional variations mirrored the trends seen in total electricity production, with several governorates recording increases over the eight months.
Water Output Declines During January to August 2026
Oman’s water production decreased over the first eight months of 2026, dropping 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from roughly 342.71 million in the same period of 2025. Water output in Muscat fell 6.2%, reaching about 128.07 million cubic metres, compared to approximately 136.57 million during the previous year. Other governorates experienced a 3.4% decrease, producing around 149.90 million cubic metres, down from about 155.19 million a year earlier.
In contrast, Dhofar bucked the national trend, with water production increasing by 3.4% to approximately 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million. These figures demonstrate that electricity and water trends diverged across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output rose both in total and net measures, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s positive result. The National Centre for Statistics and Information considers these figures preliminary.
