UAE mediation helps Russia and Ukraine swap 386 captives

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates said its latest mediation effort between Russia and Ukraine resulted in the exchange of 386 captives, with 193 people returned by each side in one of the largest prisoner swaps reported in recent months. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the operation reflected continuing diplomatic engagement aimed at securing humanitarian outcomes in the conflict, while officials in Moscow and Kyiv separately confirmed the return of their personnel.

The swap adds to a series of exchanges carried out since the war began and underscores the continued role of third-party mediation in agreements focused on prisoners of war and detainees. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the latest operation was the 22nd mediation it has conducted in the conflict, and said the cumulative number of captives exchanged through its efforts had risen to 6,691.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said 193 Russian servicemen had been returned from territory controlled by Ukraine and were receiving the support and medical attention required after the exchange. Ukrainian authorities said 193 Ukrainians had also returned, including members of the armed forces and other uniformed services, and said some of those released had been held for extended periods.

    Humanitarian focus remains central

The latest exchange follows other large swaps earlier this year, including operations announced in February, March and April in which hundreds of detainees were transferred between the two sides. Those exchanges were also presented by officials as humanitarian arrangements centered on returning military personnel and other captives, even as broader fighting continued and diplomatic progress on the wider war remained limited.

The prisoner issue has remained one of the few areas in which practical agreements have continued between Russia and Ukraine, often with outside mediation. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said returning service members and civilians remains a priority, while Russian authorities have issued similar statements on the recovery of their personnel. In this case, both sides publicly confirmed the numbers involved, matching the total announced by the UAE.

    Latest swap extends UAE role

The UAE said it would continue efforts intended to support peaceful solutions and ease the humanitarian consequences of the war. Abu Dhabi has positioned such exchanges as a narrowly focused diplomatic track designed to secure concrete results for detainees and their families. The latest operation adds to that record and comes as international efforts to keep communication channels open have increasingly centered on limited, issue-specific arrangements.

For Russia and Ukraine, the exchange delivered another synchronized return of captives at a time when battlefield conditions and political disputes still dominate the broader conflict. The transfer of 193 people from each side provided a measurable humanitarian outcome and extended a pattern of negotiated swaps that has persisted despite the absence of any broader settlement. The latest exchange was announced as a completed operation, with both sides acknowledging the returns and the UAE describing the mediation as successful. – By Content Syndication Services.
