South Korea’s Foreign Reserves Surge to $442.28 Billion in August, Marking a Four-Year High

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – In August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced a record monthly increase, reaching $442.28 billion at the end of the month. The Bank of Korea reported a rise of $14.33 billion from $427.95 billion at the close of July. This marked the largest increase since official reserve records began in 1971 and brought South Korea’s holdings to their highest level since May 2022, showing a significant acceleration compared to the smaller gains seen during the previous two months.

South Korea foreign reserves reach $442.28 billion in August
South Korea recorded its largest monthly increase in foreign exchange reserves in August.

Reserves in South Korea grew for three consecutive months, following increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August jump also surpassed the previous monthly record of $14.29 billion, set in May 2009. Despite this surge, the total remains below the all-time high of $469.21 billion recorded in October 2021. These figures include assets available within the official foreign exchange reserve holdings and are reported in U.S. dollars.

The Bank of Korea explained that the August expansion was driven by higher foreign currency deposits, returns on reserve asset management, and exchange rate fluctuations. Variations in currency values can influence the dollar valuation of assets denominated in euros, pounds, and other currencies. When reporting total reserves, the central bank converts these holdings into U.S. dollars. Therefore, fluctuations in major exchange rates can cause reported reserve balances to fluctuate even if the underlying foreign currency assets remain unchanged in the portfolio.

Securities and Deposits Lead August Growth

Foreign securities continued to be the largest component of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value increased by $7.07 billion in August, reaching $387.07 billion, which accounts for 87.5% of total reserves. This category includes government and corporate securities held among official reserve assets. Additionally, foreign currency deposits experienced a sharp rise, climbing by $7.17 billion to $30.30 billion, contributing significantly to the overall increase along with the securities.

Smaller adjustments were seen in other reserve components. Special drawing rights rose by $60 million to $15.77 billion, while the reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion. Gold holdings remained steady at $4.79 billion. The combined increase in securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly all of the $14.33 billion rise in August. Despite this, the reserve composition remained heavily weighted toward securities, even as deposits posted one of the largest increases among individual components during the month.

Reserve Level Reaches Highest Point Since May 2022

The reserve balance in August was South Korea’s highest in over four years. The last time reserves exceeded this level was in May 2022, when they peaked at $447.71 billion. The August figure also narrowed the gap with the record of $469.21 billion reported in October 2021. Official foreign exchange reserves include securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position in the international monetary system. These figures are published monthly as part of the regular assessment of the nation’s external financial assets.

The recent data indicate a notable shift in the pace of reserve accumulation during the summer months. After modest increases in June and July, August brought a record monthly gain. By the end of August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $442.28 billion, roughly $14.3 billion higher than the previous month. While still below the all-time peak, this marks the highest level since May 2022, supported by increases in securities, foreign currency deposits, and the dollar valuation of certain reserve assets.
