ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – Late Saturday, southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake rattled the region. The Alaska Earthquake Center logged the seismic event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s origin was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with a depth estimated at around 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers, according to seismologists.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Alaska near Atka
Alaska’s Aleutian Islands remain a highly active region for earthquake monitoring.

The seismic event was centered at 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. Scientists classified it as magnitude 5.0 on the local magnitude scale. Atka is situated on Atka Island within the central Aleutian chain, a remote community hundreds of miles from Alaska’s major population centers. The region experiences frequent earthquakes due to the presence of multiple active geological structures beneath the North Pacific.

The epicenter lies southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, with Mount Sergief located west of the quake’s recorded location. The wider seismic zone is characterized by surrounding islands and volcanic features. This quake was relatively shallow for the Aleutian region, which also experiences much deeper events within the descending Pacific Plate. Seismologists analyze the location, depth, and magnitude to differentiate these various seismic activities.

Frequent seismic activity in the Aleutian chain

The Aleutian Arc ranks among Alaska’s most active earthquake zones, formed along the boundary where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate. This process, known as subduction, generates earthquakes spanning a wide range of depths and magnitudes. The tectonic activity extends thousands of kilometers across the North Pacific, with Alaska experiencing thousands of earthquakes annually, many of which occur beneath or near the Aleutian Islands.

This region has also been the site of some of Alaska’s strongest quakes. In 1957, a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck the Andreanof Islands. The Rat Islands saw a magnitude 8.7 event in 1965, and large tremors hit the Andreanof Islands again in 1986 and 1996. These significant earthquakes all occurred along the same broad plate boundary driving Alaska’s seismic activity, with their locations and depths varying across the Aleutian system.

    Statewide seismic monitoring and detection

Earthquakes in the Aleutian region can originate along the main boundary between the Pacific and North American plates or within the Pacific Plate as it dives beneath Alaska. Shallow crustal earthquakes may also occur within the overriding plate itself. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a national earthquake database and issues reviewed data on seismic events across Alaska and the United States as a whole.

The recent magnitude 5.0 quake on August 8 adds to Alaska’s extensive seismic record. Its location southeast of Atka situates it within a well-known zone of recurrent activity. With a depth of 17 kilometers, it qualifies as a shallow event by regional standards. Ground motion from remote islands and mainland communities is detected by monitoring stations across Alaska, allowing scientists to analyze signals, refine earthquake locations, and update measurements of magnitude and depth throughout the state.

South Korea’s outbound shipments saw a 68.7% increase compared to the previous year in August, totaling $98.25 billion. This surge was primarily driven by ongoing global demand for high-performance memory chips and infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Data published by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources revealed that imports rose 22.5% to $63.51 billion during the same period, resulting in a monthly trade surplus of $34.75 billion. The impressive performance extends the nation’s trade growth streak to a 15th consecutive month, making South Korea Asia’s fourth-largest economy to do so.
