WHO Highlights Critical Staff and Funding Gaps Hampering Ebola Fight in Congo, Urges Urgent Support

GENEVA / RankWire.AI / – The response to the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s territory faces severe challenges due to substantial shortages in both personnel and funding. The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus species, has spread across six provinces, with over 6,000 cases and 3,175 deaths reported. The World Health Organization is calling on global donors to urgently provide financial aid to enable deployment of frontline health teams and expand isolation facilities in distant eastern regions.

To combat the geographical spread, authorities adopted a decentralized treatment approach, aiming to establish care centers nearer to affected rural populations. Almost 1,400 treatment beds have been set up across 59 operational centers. Nevertheless, technical evaluations indicate that an additional 1,600 beds are needed to achieve the target of 3,000 total beds. Fulfilling this goal will require recruiting and training around 5,000 more healthcare workers to support the existing 9,000 staff necessary for full operational readiness.

Limited resources and operational costs continue to hinder expansion efforts in remote provinces. The daily cost for personal protective equipment averages $25 per healthcare worker entering high-risk patient isolation zones. Running a standard 50-bed treatment facility costs around $500,000, posing significant financial hurdles amid declining global donor funding. Data provided by the Emirates News Agency underscores the importance of fully operational treatment centers and adequately trained personnel to improve patient survival and stop the spread of the virus.

WHO Reports Expansion of Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak

A key obstacle remains the shortage of non-governmental partners capable of managing complex isolation facilities. World Health Organization technical lead Luca Fontana stated that only five or six global humanitarian organizations possess the expertise needed to establish and operate specialized Ebola treatment centers. Without additional partners stepping in to manage existing sites, technical teams remain tied to current facilities, limiting their ability to deploy resources to new outbreak zones.

In response, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Health has taken direct control of several treatment centers established during the initial phase of the epidemic. However, health officials warn that if transmission continues across eastern border regions, the government’s capacity might become overstretched. Staff shortages and funding issues are hampering Ebola response efforts, with international health agencies urging immediate deployment of additional partners to support frontline workers.

The Rising Cost of Protective Gear Challenges Daily Operations

To meet the demands of expansion, the Congolese government alongside international health organizations has introduced a six-month operational response plan valued at $1.3 billion. This plan emphasizes strengthening epidemiological surveillance, acquiring vital medical supplies, increasing community engagement, and ensuring availability of personal protective equipment for clinical staff. Since there is no licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, supportive clinical care within equipped treatment centers remains the main strategy for reducing fatalities.

International health agencies continue to appeal to governments and charitable organizations worldwide for prompt funding commitments. Updates on case figures, facility deployment, and resource distribution will be available through official public health portals as teams expand clinical infrastructure across eastern regions.
