BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has enhanced its Ebola emergency efforts by purchasing €2.1 million worth of PCR tests specifically for the Bundibugyo virus outbreak. This initiative involves open-platform testing kits that laboratories can integrate with their existing systems. The procurement process was supported by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Shipments are scheduled to commence in August as health authorities confront a significant outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and spreading into neighboring regions.

European Commission adds PCR support for Ebola outbreak
PCR testing support strengthens the international response to Ebola in DR Congo.

The World Health Organization will receive the testing kits through its Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics based in Dubai. Following receipt, WHO will coordinate the distribution of supplies to key locations involved in the Ebola containment efforts. PCR testing is vital for laboratories to confirm infections accurately and to facilitate surveillance efforts. Confirmed results enable health teams to make informed decisions on patient treatment, isolation protocols, and contact tracing. This latest delivery of laboratory resources arrives as authorities continue monitoring transmission across multiple provinces and health zones within the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Previously, the European Commission allocated an additional €2.5 million for rapid molecular point-of-care tests and testing devices. These supplies are intended to support the regional response coordinated by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Together, these two diagnostic agreements amount to a total of €4.6 million. They are part of a broader European support package for nations managing the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. This assistance includes medical supplies, preparedness initiatives, and public health resources aimed at bolstering response efforts in affected and neighboring regions.

Testing capacity intensifies amid a major health crisis

As of August 12, WHO data indicated the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths. Infections had been identified across 54 health zones spanning six provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this outbreak as the largest Ebola epidemic documented in the country. Continued transmission across interconnected geographic clusters demands sustained efforts from surveillance teams, laboratories, treatment facilities, and local health agencies.

In its August update, WHO maintained a very high national risk assessment for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while classifying the risk for neighboring nations as high and elsewhere as low. On August 24, the organization issued updated temporary guidelines following another meeting of its International Health Regulations Emergency Committee. These recommendations focus on surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, and community engagement. They also address public health measures related to mobility and mass gatherings during the ongoing response effort.

European health aid reaches €493 million

The European Commission announced a mobilization of €493 million dedicated to emergency assistance, vaccines, treatments, and health security in the Great Lakes and Uganda regions. European health agencies have also contributed to laboratory diagnostics, surveillance activities, and preparedness initiatives. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to assess the risk to populations in Europe as very low. Since Ebola primarily spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, swift detection, safe clinical practices, and stringent infection control are crucial to minimizing transmission risks.

The ongoing Bundibugyo virus outbreak is classified as a public health emergency of international concern under WHO’s international health framework. Currently, no approved vaccine or specific therapy exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Consequently, health authorities rely heavily on surveillance, rapid diagnostics, patient isolation, clinical care, infection control measures, and close monitoring of contacts. The new PCR testing supplies will strengthen these efforts. WHO, Africa CDC, and national health agencies are actively coordinating operations as countries strive for rapid case identification and uphold public health protocols within affected communities.
