DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – According to the World Health Organization, containment of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be achievable within three months if sufficient resources are mobilized. As of August 16, official data indicate 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has affected six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate close to 47%. This has made it the deadliest Ebola event documented in the country’s history.

Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, emphasized that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining adequate staffing, supplies, and operational support. The ongoing response has secured approximately $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. Over a two-week span, health teams have added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 additional epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers. These teams focus on surveillance, contact tracing, case identification, and patient referrals. Critical resources such as ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel are essential across affected regions to support these efforts.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. While Ituri remained the primary hub of transmission in mid-August, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases and deaths, health officials have observed that many new infections lack any known link to previously identified patients. This gap underscores the urgent need for faster case detection and contact monitoring. Efforts have been intensified to expand surveillance capabilities, enabling earlier identification of infections and prompt transfer of patients to treatment centers.

Expansion of Response Efforts Across Affected Regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since the virus was first identified in 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Additionally, Uganda has reported cases linked to the broader outbreak, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been recorded there since June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical interventions mainly focus on early detection, supportive care, infection control, and swift contact tracing. Efforts also include safe burials and community outreach to prevent further spread. Local health workers assist in identifying suspected cases and guiding patients to treatment facilities. The authorities have provided hygiene materials and trained personnel in affected communities. Early supportive care remains vital for managing patients with Ebola symptoms.

Surveillance and Funding Remain Crucial for Containment

While contact monitoring saw improvements in August, some affected areas still lagged behind public health goals. By August 12, response teams were tracking 17,460 of the 20,740 contacts listed, representing approximately 84%. Additional field epidemiologists have been brought in to enhance detection efforts and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers continue to report suspected cases and facilitate patient access to clinical care. During the outbreak, health workers have faced significant risks, with over 150 infections among medical personnel recorded by early August.

Designated as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, the outbreak sees ongoing efforts by national authorities and international partners involving laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement. Recent weekly reports reveal hundreds of new confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous data. Baldé stated that the three-month containment assessment relies heavily on securing the necessary resources to sustain these operations. Efforts continue in regions affected by insecurity and disruptions in healthcare services.
