In a major advancement for the UAE’s space capabilities, Bayanat AI PLC, in collaboration with Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (Yahsat), has successfully launched the nation’s first Low Earth Orbit Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. The launch, executed on August 16, 2024, at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, was in partnership with ICEYE, known for its innovative SAR satellite operations. This landmark achievement marks a significant stride in the UAE’s Earth observation endeavors.

UAE enters new era with SAR satellite launch

The satellite, integrated by Exolaunch, was sent into orbit aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11 rideshare mission. It has since established stable communication with ground stations, indicating a successful start to its operations. This mission introduces the first satellite in what will be a comprehensive SAR constellation aimed at enhancing global monitoring capabilities through high-resolution imaging, regardless of weather conditions.

The SAR technology, which allows for the capturing of high-resolution images day and night, sets this satellite apart from conventional optical imaging satellites. The new satellite will play a crucial role in various sectors, including disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility, by providing timely and precise geospatial insights.

This launch is part of a broader Earth Observation Space Program initiated in 2023, aimed at developing a constellation of satellites that will enhance the UAE’s capabilities in remote sensing and Earth observation. The successful deployment of this satellite reaffirms the UAE leadership’s commitment to achieving its National Space Strategy 2030.

The strategic initiative undertaken by Bayanat and Yahsat not only advances the UAE’s position in the space sector but also supports the national goal of establishing sovereign satellite data acquisition and processing capabilities. This development underscores the progressive vision of the UAE leadership and their dedication to fostering local talent in the high-tech space industry.
